about

Defying Culture was the first song that Jen contributed to Provision.
This song was written in the summer of 2005' and I can still remember feeling so honored to finally be writing alongside her, for what would become our 3rd album.

Jen wrote the lyrics to the song. I added some words here and there to tighten it up in pre-production. It was largely unchanged from it's original form, which has always been the case for songs written by the members of Provision and submitted to me for my thoughts.

I did not write Defying Culture. So I can't truly say what it's about.
Therefore I put my own feelings and emotions into the story to make it flesh.

To me, this is a tale of forbidden love in a time of war. Two hearts from two different lands. Two people who were meant to be enemies, who fell in love despite their countries ideals. Bound by faith and honor to their homelands and their cultures. Yet bound to each other by love. And though one perishes, their memory is carried on with the birth of a new life.

Our wonderful friend Bartłomiej Salamon (Poldek) of the Polish Synthpop Band - Sexy Suicide made us an awesome tribute video for Defying Culture that you can check out on You Tube. The video features footage from one of my all time favorite movies - Dream a Little Dream. And there's a special dedication at the end of the video. It's a touching tribute, we've always been very honored by.

The title of this song was also used by long time Provision Fan and Friend DJ Defier, for his Club Nights. Defier is also from Poland, but resides in Dublin, Ireland. Defying Culture Dublin can be found on Facebook where they host Events and Parties for Depeche Mode Fans and those who love Synthpop. To have one of our songs as the name for a Club Event Night and Fan Community, is an amazing honor we simply have no words for.

Defying Culture has never been performed Live by Provision.
Not in any lineup of the band. Not ever. Perhaps one day though.

lyrics

Defying Culture

I face the red sky, with you by my side.
We will defy, honor never dies.
It's getting late, now the fleet is flying.
In the underground, my heart beats near yours.
We will, engrave our names in history.

Until the day I found you. I was so lost.
Now cemented in blood. This love will never be torn.
With faith and honor, we are defying culture.
Now cemented in blood. With us new life is born.

They're building heroes again. You turn away from the truth.
I'm left in the rain, with no way; to defend myself.
It's getting late, now the day is dying.
My cold heart, fills with a poison.
With my last breath, the war comes to an end.
